On International Day of UN Peacekeepers (29 May), we pay tribute to all the uniformed and civilian personnel who have served in UN Peacekeeping operations. This day is an opportunity to commend their invaluable contribution to the Organization’s work, and pay respect to the more than 4,000 peacekeepers who have lost their lives while serving under the UN flag.
This year’s theme, “The road to a lasting peace: Leveraging the power of youth for peace and security”, highlights the vital role of youth in peace processes as acknowledged by resolution 2250 of the UN Security Council. Consisting of five pillars…

In 2020, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2535 that called for the full implementation of the Youth, Peace and Security Agenda into peacebuilding and peacekeeping operations. Recognizing the motivation of youth wanting to participate in peace initiatives and their ability for unique contributions, UN Peacekeeping missions acknowledge that inclusion of this demographic is essential to drive positive change and build and sustain prosperous societies.

Taking a piece of leather in her hand, Bachira, a Tuareg artisan, starts weaving an ornament that will be sewed onto a new colourful tribal saddle cushion that may end up decorating a home somewhere.
Bachira is an accomplished leather worker. She is among 360 artisans in Mali sponsored by the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) to promote social cohesion and dialogue through traditional art.

The highest standards of conduct are a critical aspect of implementing the mandates for United Nations peace operations. In his video message opening a recent meeting of Member States on strengthening the conduct of peacekeeping personnel, the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, stressed that “Member States are our vital partners” to “strengthen accountability for the conduct of peacekeeping personnel.”
During this virtual event attended by close to 80 representatives of Permanent Missions and national authorities, António Guterres asked the member states to “continue to make progress on this collective priority by learning from the lessons of the…

This was the very clear message sent by the UN Security Council in January this year, and one that we — some local Friends of the UN Women, Peace and Security agenda in Cyprus — would like to highlight.
Now is the time to ensure that women are at the forefront of efforts to resolve the Cyprus Issue.
The benefits of doing so are clear and overwhelming.
When women are included in peace processes, the result is more just and equal societies. Peace attained with the involvement of women…

I took up my appointment as deputy joint special representative with the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in Darfur, Sudan and received my first briefing on December 15, 2015.
In the briefing, it was reported that two weeks prior, villages in northern Darfur, specifically Anka, had been decimated for the third time by armed groups, women raped and communities displaced. I inquired about what the mission did and was told that continuing security concerns had prevented peacekeepers from traveling to the affected area. To me, this did not make sense and had to change. …

This week, in the sweltering heat, I took over command of the UK’s newest peacekeeping force. The soldiers of the UK’s Long Range Reconnaissance Group are made up of specialists from across the British Army. They include infantry and reconnaissance soldiers, drone operators, electronic warfare teams and a high-tech surgical team.
It may be a small force but it is a capable one.
Able to patrol for a month at a time and travel hundreds of kilometres from MINUSMA’s base at Gao, it can travel further, through searing temperatures, and put UN peacekeepers into isolated…

The institution of peacekeeping, while one of the UN’s greatest contributions to global stability, has been subject to several challenges in recent decades, due in large part to the shifting dynamics present in modern low-security environments. An increase in transnational terrorism and conflicts involving several belligerent groups call for a twenty-first-century approach to peacekeeping, a gap which the Comprehensive Planning and Performance Assessment System — CPAS — endeavours to fill.
First implemented in 2018 in MINUSCA, the ongoing peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (CAR), CPAS provides a platform in which data is compiled by and…
